Dear YMCA Member,
The Berkeley County Family YMCA has come a long way in 14 years. We have reached out to our community in
service and programs. The YMCA has seen incredible growth in serving its members and citizens of Berkeley
County.
As we move into our 15th year, a significant amount of accomplishments and a vision for our future can be
clearly recognized.
Programs: Shrink Down Berkeley County, Festival in the Park, Lions Beach, Summer Camp, After School
Program, Water Aerobics (80 seniors), Arthritis Aquatics, 2 Season of Soccer (with over 500 kids), Swim Team (50
swimmers), Basketball (150 players), Football (105 players), Cheerleading (40 girls) and we will continue to
increase and improve all of our programs to better serve you and the community.
Facilities: Both the facility on Rembert Dennis Blvd. and at Lions Beach has been tremendous improvements
in the last year. The YMCA has just signed a three year contract to manage Lions Beach and plans to continue
improvements there and increase year round availability for the community.
The property where the YMCA building is located includes seven acres. Your YMCA Board is in the process of
developing a master plan which includes dreams and vision for the near future and long range. The Board goals
are to improve parking and lay out plans for an Olympic sized swimming facility, a senior center and several ball
fields.
Finances: The YMCA has been financially stable for years. We have just completed out annual review (by
Dennis L. Gore CPA LLC of Charleston, SC). However, there are always a few bumps in the road. The weather
during the summer caused us to tighten our budget. We have two major fund raising events planned for the
remainder of 2008: the 4th Annual Golf Tournament and the Share the Spirit Annual Campaign where members
earmark their donations to your YMCA. Last year your donations in the amount of $49,000 helped YMCA continue
to improve our facilities and serve our members and community.
Rates: In the last 14 years our YMCA has been in existence, only two rate increases have been necessary. At
our last Board Meeting the board recognized that the cost of our utility bill increases, fuel cost increases to heat
the pool, and the increase in minimum wage have all created the need for a minimal but needed rate adjustment.
We have done our best to keep our rates as low as possible, with much detailed discussion and comparison of
other health care club's prices. Research shows that our rates are better than others, for the service provided. We
hope you will agree with us that this is both a necessary and timely move.
